ENP & Associates led a team of planners, designers, zoning experts, elected and appointed officials and community members in a community-based process to create a new Master Plan for the City of Ypsilanti, Michigan. The resulting Shape Ypsilanti Master Plan has ten guiding principles, a form-based land use approach, and implementation measures to create a safe, diverse, sustainable city.
Public engagement was central to the process, guided by a Steering Committee representing the diversity of the community. On the digital side, a website, e-mail newsletter, Twitter feed and Facebook page were used to educate and invite people to participate in the process. The Shape Ypsilanti Facebook page had over 2,000 likes. Three charrettes and two rounds of focus groups were held to gather input, create consensus and build momentum. The process reached over 400 people with face to face interactions over a 10-month span.
The Shape Ypsilanti Master Plan won the 2014 Michigan Association of Planning Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan. Since the master plan’s adoption, the City has adopted a form-based zoning code and become a Redevelopment Ready community.
