Michigan Association of Planning Community Engagement Training Development
Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) selected ENP & Associates to develop a 3-hour training, workbook and a toolkit of community engagement techniques. The training, now offered statewide by MAP, begins with why, when and how to use effective community engagement techniques. It features the public participation spectrum of Inform, Consult, Involve, Collaborate and Empower from the International Association of Public Participation.
The second half of the training goes into detail on how to design, do, analyze and communicate community engagement efforts. Adult learning exercises are scattered throughout the training. The workbook helps users to describe their project, gauge the appropriate level of community engagement, determine goals, identify stakeholders, match community needs to steps in the process, select tools, cement roles and schedule a community engagement effort. The workbook’s toolkit is a glossary of community engagement techniques with tips and resources for each. The techniques are divided into different categories: community engagement approaches, formal events, informal interactions, invitations and on-line interactions.
As one of MAP’s many training programs, the Community Engagement Training has received excellent evaluations from participants. MAP has subsequently hired ENP & Associates to design trainings on language and equity in planning.
